I am going to Cairo January 15-29, 2007. I will be traveling alone. I would like to also get out of the City

What would you suggest I do? I want to meet people, eat local foods, possibly go Scuba Diving, and am willing to travel out of the city of Cairo. The Nile and the Red Sea interest me. I do have a hotel for the first two nights. Any suggestions? As an American, should I be concerned about where I visit?

Thank you.

You should be careful and use common sense.

Some places you can’t go by yourself but need to join a convoy if you’re going into the Hot Zone. I went with a tour group and for a great part of the trip we were escorted by military personel. Quite cool, if you ask me.

I loved Karnak and Thebes area. The Bent Pyramid, Red Pyramid and that area was interesting too but I’m into historical sorts of things. Not sure about diving, though I did hear there were some great places to go.

    Have a wonderful time.

Be prepared to have your bags and pockets checked and x-rayed many times as they have more security that you’re used to.

I also suggest taking hand sanitizer and pocket packs of tissue because you can’t always find hot water or toilet paper in some of the bathrooms.

Fantastic Choice for a vacation.I went to Egypt and did this:
Spent two days visiting the Cairo Museum.Went to see the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx.Checked out some older pyramids at Saquarra.Hopped on a train and went to Luxor the Valley of the Kings.Had a Nile sail on an Egyption sailboat.Went to Hurgahada and went Scuba diving-the best I’ve ever done. They also say Sharm al Sheik is great for scuba.
I don’t think they will differentiate you as an American if you look European.Enjoy your vacation.I would rank Egypt as an excellent vacation spot, right alongside Thailand and Mexico.

I’m an Egyption student in Cairo UNI. Faculty of Engineering, 3rd Computer department

Welcom to Egypt and I wish you can spend a nice time in Egypt
you can go in the Nile by a special ship or boat you will enjoy with the fresh air in the Nile.

you must visit the Egyption Museum in Cairo in El Tahrer squar, there you will find our local food Koshary and the other local food or your Amirecan food just ask any one in the Tahrer squar where can I eat “what you want from our food” and he will tell you

and don’t worry as an American you can go anywhere you want

I am very excited for you. Egyptians love Americans. When you start meeting the people you will think they are you long-time family. Please don’t be afraid to travel I went there by myself (female-blonde ) hooked up with a family and went all over the place. If you want to scuba dive you have to go to Sharm El Sheik. The best way is to fly from Cairo (fastest ). I love Alexandria for its history. I think the best way to travel around Egypt is by train. Make sure you ask for the best-class train. It’s still cheap. Also it would be very easy for you to hire a cab even for the day. They are very cheap just make sure that you ask upfront. I paid $100 for a week of cab service. Luxor is also good.
Try to learn some key Egyptian phrases it will take you a long way. Especially “On-a mob-suita” means I am very happy/content! Their food is excellent. Always carry your bottled water. I did eat all of the fruits and vegetables washed in their water and had no problem. Have fun you’re in for a treat. I’m leaving in March myself.
